First great personal discovery of Italian Marco Malvaldi this early 2011, with "musty smell" as early as the fourth round of literature. After the first three stories whose protagonists are four elderly patrons of the Gleam, this novel sees the debut of an extraordinary and unique personaggio, Pellegrino Artusi, critico letterario, scrittore e gastronomo italiano realmente esistito a cavallo tra l’800 e il 900, ed autore del celebre manuale di cucina “La scienza in cucina e l’arte di mangiar bene”.
Dove sta la particolarità capace di rendere i romanzi Malvaldi così caratteristici, atipici e assolutamente deliziosi? Sicuramente nell’abilità di sapere mischiare una affascinante indagine classica investigativa a una comicità tutta Toscana spassosa ed esilarante. Un giallo che rimane rigoroso nelle sue meccaniche ma, allo stesso tempo, non si prende troppo sul serio e viene dissacrato nelle sue fondamenta.
Giugno del 1895. In un castello della maremma Toscana di proprietà della famiglia del Barone Bonaiuti, nobile in rovina, sono attesi due ospiti importanti. Tal Signor Ciceri, stimato fotografo giunto al castello non si sa per quale precisato segreto motivo e il sopracitato Artusi, con probabili compiti di supervisione delle pregevoli doti culinarie della cucina della ricca famiglia. In un clima di segreti e di veleni, tipico delle belle detective novels come si facevano una volta, viene rinvenuto in cantina il cadavere del maggiordomo Teodoro, presumibilmente avvelenato. Sul luogo del delitto viene chiamato ad investigare il delegato Artistico, coadiuvato nell’indagine dall’ingegnosità e dall’acutezza del mitico Artusi.
Credo di non avere mai riso così tanto in vita mia, letteralmente con la pancia in hand, approaching a yellow book. "Musty smell" is composed of a set of characters (and consequent suspicion) incredible, totally absurd and head castings. Unforgettable in this sense the offspring of two children of the Baron family, Gaddo mediocre poet-nothing to Lapo great misogynist pimp and Porcelain of the worst kind. Hope the old Baroness, who was forced to a wheelchair, but perhaps the only person with brain until her niece Cecilia (with the only misfortune of being born female in a time when women were relegated to secondary roles). From Mistress to Ms. Barbara intimidated by his two spinster cousins, the shadow of the Baron and Cosima Ugolina Bonaiuti iron, the first secret Artusi love. From the laughs eventually die an unfortunate figure of Yorkshire Crumb poor, wretched dog targeted actions as unworthy of the inhabitants of the castle and the protagonist of the novel's funniest entr'actes.

el'irriverenza I wish to emphasize that behind this novel there is a demanding and careful research and documentation, found in the deep analysis of the political and social circumstance of the time, the accurate description of chemical preparations to even the recipes (yes, my feeling is this is a significant Malvaldi wolverine, at least as Artusi). Lovers of good food, it is to take several ideas in this direction; that gypsy meatloaf, for example, still tickles my appetite.
really a little jewel this "musty smell", a reading that reconciles with the yellow kind. With the hope that Mark will continue in parallel, the series of legendary Artusi, now I rush to the library to retrieve the saga of the three old men. This generates Malvaldi healthy addiction.
