Crimes by train - AV (Polillo 2010 - Dachshund n.91)

" Also in this collection of short stories, trains are dangerous places and almost never reach their destination with the same number of passengers alive when they left. "

Like every year, even if close to last Christmas Polillo Publisher has published an interesting story collection of the best writers of the Golden Age. This year the theme was chosen to train as a place of crime par excellence. If today, perhaps the train has lost much of its charm (if you choose to move over long distances?), At the dawn of the detective genre, it was still one of the most modern means of transport and dynamic symbol of speed and taste for adventure. When you think of the yellow train, immediately comes to mind Agatha Christie and her "Murder on the Orient Express" (1933), undoubtedly the most famous and original story ever set on a train. But many authors before police wrestled with Christie's and chose this environment for their adventures by the end of 1800 (in fact, three stories were published towards the end of 800, including one of Sir A. Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes). The very public Christie expressed his The Plymouth in 1923. Besides, she was a great traveler and the train always exercised a great fascination about her in preference to air and ships for its romantic charm. In fact in his autobiography "My Life" wrote: "Trains are a wonderful invention, my love forever. Rail travel is seeing nature, people, cities, churches and rivers, in short, life. "
In the stories in this collection trains used are extremely varied. The trains are privileged English course, whose names already suggest some kind of adventure: The Plymouth Express, the Cornish Riviera Express, the express of the North-Western Railways, the Brighton Line, the Flying Scots, a postal truck and a freight car Great Western Railway. Then there are a couple of adventures set in the London Underground, other trains in Boston as the American & Western and even in Argentina.
Now, my friends, I can only say: get on the train and make yourself comfortable, the killing begins.

Tua - Claudia Pineiro (Feltrinelli 2011)

The back cover says " Crime Family . Chasing a story, by the Hitchcockian atmosphere, that will do you sleep at night . Start
the book one evening, at about 21.30, we remain glued to midnight ... and I finish! I would say that I took those words literally.

Writing is scorrevolissima alternating ego narrator and the protagonist Inès the calls of his teenage daughter Lali with her friend's heart. Inès
finds a note, written in red lipstick (the cover ... but that is beautiful?) And signed "Yours".
What goes on in the mind of a wife who discovers her husband's betrayal? And what do you think after she followed her husband, sees him arguing with another woman fatally beat push it to the ground where his head and dies? That
scornfully to call Tua, her ... the other. That try to justify the actions of her husband, confusing our own mind at the expense of her daughter. Because there is also a daughter and her part in the story.
The story unfolds with Inès that creates a kind a "script" to support her husband, creargli an alibi, his findings do, think, think, find solutions. A trip into the ego psychological, the feats that probably most of women could perform in a similar situation. All for the sake of appearances. Why do
Inès, the important thing is not only being, but also appear. For this assumes that his is a wealthy and happy. What more could you want? Of course now lacking sex but "I have so many beautiful things, I must not stare at me on one that I miss."
There are a couple of twists that I did not expect, for "enchanted" by the reasoning di Inès, non guardavo oltre, a discapito di quell’obiettività che a volte i sentimenti, le emozioni e l’egoismo bloccano la visuale.

Sleep forever - Sabine Thiesler (Corbaccio 2011)

Take care wherever you go now. We were happy together and never forget you. Too bad for you, too bad for us, Johannes. Too bad you've ever met Carolina, otherwise we would certainly still spent many good years together. My friend, my love, sleep well. Sleep forever.

Magda child. Had an 'unhappy childhood, was forced to accept the presence of the lover of her father because her mother, too weak, has been passively the presence of the 'other'. When one betrays the other, life is over is the phrase often repeated her mom and imagine that this can have it scored. Magda
adulthood. He has a happy, well off, working in a pharmacy, Johannes live peacefully with her husband, the love of his life and have realized their dream by purchasing the Rock, a wonderful home in Tuscany. But Johannes was wrong, has betrayed her and ruined all their lives, their future happiness together, must pay, she knows how to make them pay.
And one morning with a sky clear and bright sunshine during their holiday in Tuscany, Magda lovingly prepared breakfast favorite Johannes, the table, looks at him while eating his muesli and looks at him with equal love and die, reassuring him that the end is coming soon and do not have much to suffer " not blame bad for what I did: there was no alternative. I would no longer could trust you. And I did not even leave to another. This was the only way. Forgive .

30 pages, more or less the murder was consummated, and I wondered what would fill the other 400 Sabine Thiesler. I discovered soon got involved in a psychological thriller of the highest level. Magda removes the murder, perhaps. Magda tells everyone that her husband is on a trip to Rome, and she is the first to believe, perhaps. The arrival of the brother of Johannes, Lukas, the upset to the point that she believes that her husband, perhaps. Repeatedly reading the book I wondered whether there is or there is Magda. The
Thiesler is very good to insinuate doubt and just as good at keeping the reader in suspense and drag it to the bright madness of Magda: nothing seems to dent his armor, his determination scary, no one is allowed to intervene in his perfect little world, anyone can intervene between you and your happiness will pay dearly.
The contrast between the splendor of the setting, the hatching of the characters and accurate, the concern that we breathe is page after page " sound like sandpaper rubbing on the wood that .
The only flaw, in my opinion, the ending is a bit 'rushed and I would add that one mind "evil" as I would have preferred the more Thiesler dared to make this novel a masterpiece. But even so I can assure you that deserves to be read and Magda deserves to be known, do not disappoint and certainly not let it upset, has a temper .....

Orazio Odi 2.3 Aequam Memento

Map of Destiny - Glenn Cooper (North 2011) There was

I, Barthomieu, monaco abbey of Ruach, I have two hundred and twenty years. And this is my story.

After reading the first two novels by Glenn Cooper, "The library of the dead" and "The Book of Souls", I could not wait to read the new novel 's American author. Again, Glenn seems desk study how to nail the reader on the pages of his novel, and like the previous two, action and no shortage of pathos. First things first.
Stating that " Map of Destiny" is the most beautiful of the past is not even a euphemism.
The writing is certainly better and more mature el 'only fault I can find is that the pattern is too literary schematically, "chilling" the flow of reading and putting, as they say, "too many irons in the fire."
Since "The library of the dead" Glen Cooper has proven to be a master in being able to interweave narrative plots developed at different times and in this case the novel intersects three historical periods.
Overcoming the initial part, we get to the second block of narrative when an abbot, who lived for 200 years, writes a book in code, telling secrets (and I avoid to mention not to spoil the reading), I'd better stay that way , so that the book itself is walled all 'inside of his monastery.
the book back into the open after a fire in the monastery stesso.
Ma cosa si cela in quella caverna di tanto importante da far sì that death begins to fall on members of the team of archaeologist?
Why the 'whole village of Ruach is reluctant to give support to the archaeological mission, trying to hinder the work of scholars?
Excellent is the characterization and Simard it is just an example.
When I had spoken with Cooper, he told me that, in addition to historical research, as much time for writing the novel employs its own study of the characters, and you believe it.
short, a book that I highly recommend.

Basic Sunfish Diagram

Il cane “molecolare”

Yara Gambirasio The story of the poor has come to life, in terms of disinformation dog, a new subject: the "molecular dog." Called once
pistaiole , this dog is actually a Bloodhound - Dog blood trail - Group 6 ENCI Section 1.1 - used since the seventh century as a hunting hound in (ungulates injured). For its construction
morphological and functional is a subject with great strength and an extraordinary sense of smell (thanks to the prismatic construction of the skull, the sinuses under-developed, divergent lines of the head and facial profile slightly arched) doti che gli permettono di seguire senza sforzo una pista su lunghe distanze e attraverso terreni accidentati.
Ma perché il Bloodhound – chiamato più correttamente “ Chien de Saint Hubert "- has been defined in this way, beyond" wow effect "that necessitates the TV, doing such damage to the breed to see me get daily e-mail that asks for addresses of specific holdings of" molecular dogs ?
From what does this term?
E 'inappropriate?
to respond seriously to this question must first understand how it is structured the nose of a bloodhound (like any other dog), his motivational triggers related to predation and a specific study on the research technically called "a megaolfatto - or "microsfron" (different from the research "to teleolfatto - also known as "teleosfron).
As biologists know, the chemical components called "molecular " have a higher specific gravity and are deposited on the ground, leaving a trail for Bloodhound is particularly interesting to the point where, thanks to the pendulous ears that allow him to work in "One Track Mind " very high percentage of resources to concentrate without distractions olfactory exploration may in any way interfere in the search. On
pendulous ears, however, is worth remembering - to better understand this peculiarity - that have been selected so especially for conveying important odors (those covered by the research) to the nose and not allow it to mix with those carried by the wind.
In hunting, however, these chemical traces are really fresh and, above all, mixed.
the blood of the prey are mixed microbial fermentation processes trampled soil, saliva of the animal injured, his sweat, any dung: a highway of odors that lead to the Bloodhound target with surgical precision.
However, if this is true of the "Chien de Saint Hubert ", the same applies to all hunting dogs, although percentage of energy invested - and in particular ways - different.
As I mentioned earlier, the "megaolfatto" and "teleolfatto" differences assume that every dog \u200b\u200blover knows well: while the search in "megaolfatto shall be effected consistently with his nose to the ground, as in" teleolfatto is telescopic, ie able to assess the presence and position of particles from afar, not from inhaling the track where the prey has passed (or person), but sucking wind that is suspended in minute quantities.
Undoubtedly this type of research needs of dog whose conformation of the skull provides extensive frontal sinuses and nasal bridge straight, even pointing upwards as in the case of the Pointer.
A parte questo, trovo sconcertante - As dogs and perilous part of the city "by Rescue Dog Units Boat" (and thus attributed to the Civil Protection of Regione Marche) - the expectation unjustified proposal through the media about this dog. Through improper
label (for the general public) of "molecular dog" has a wonderful oversized first race without explaining what this actually is and then later discredit the volunteers who tried to find traces of the poor Yara.
Any thought or opinion on, as always, I leave it to readers.

Trench Foot How It Was Dealt With

Three hours of pure madness - Richard Matheson (Fanucci 2009)

a TV movie, a long episode of a TV show, but both well done. Here's what got me back to mind after reading this novel by Matheson.
"Fury on Sunday" (and with a habit of changing unnecessarily titles) is in effect a very fast-paced noir and well focused in three hours (of course): a noir, and I say now, well managed and that leaves the reader with a sense of discomfort on the skin subtle but undeniable.
Matheson, had already said on other occasions, has the ability to use few words to outline well-balanced thoughts, situations and characters: the brush strokes are fine, clear, draw sketches so perfect that you do not need any kind of further definition, we brought in the mind of the protagonist and you hear the crazy crazy on you, on your skin, like a hot molasses we'd like to wash away without success. But the author demonstrates further
ability to jump from one "mind" to another paragraph in paragraph telling thoughts and views without any need to announce the change of perspective: the rhythm is syncopated, perfect to the penny and the reader is drawn without losing , with bated breath for the time necessary to the unfolding of the story.
The story is not allowed and frills from a simple incident: a young man, who was imprisoned in a mental hospital for repeated violence, escapes and decides to "liberate" the only woman who ever wanted (can not use the term "beloved "in this case) from the husband who, in his view sick, took her away from him, and the only way to free her husband and is killing anyone who stands in the middle.
From here a story that in time of the narrative, takes the famous three hours and I challenge you to read longer.

Bello.

The alibi of Scotland Yard - Don Betteridge (Polillo 2011)

According to the narrator of this story crimes that are read in novels, are mostly implausible. The writers of those years (the year 1938) do nothing but try to invent some new system so much as it is absurd to kill someone. But now the times are starting to change and with them the methods devised by the killers to get rid of dell'incomodo turn. Just crimes with closed chambers, houses cursed, ghosts, murders, curses, death, footsteps on the ceiling, trained monkeys, mastiffs Saving Silverman, sharp arrows, poisonous South American snakes spotted and mysterious radiation! Also because, as the literary experience of almost 50 years earlier, the case of devices that do not absolutely guarantee the impunity for those who put them in place.
This kind of tricks can possibly satisfy the tastes of readers of detective novels, but in reality have absolutely no practical or functional. Too complicated and cerebral. Not to mention the disposal of the corpse. The House of Commons, the Wax Museum, the carriages of the era, the zoo, the Tower of London, the Egyptian rooms, mazes of hedges, tennis courts, the Elizabethan theaters and even the graves of others. All
location is very impressive and spectacular course. But that effort. And that risk. Hence, also the narrator, almost apologizing with whimsical yellow and writers with their readers who are probably hungry " begin to despair of their arguments When she describes the way in which I killed Monkham: it was all very simple. "A simple plan, elementary, effective surgery. A prêt-à-porter, reusable, easily adaptable to the needs of the moment of the season (a slimy blackmailer, a rich wife, a faithless husband, a lover pretentious, an importunate heir, a fellow bully etc ... well take a bit 'you according to your wishes). But no less accurate than other more fanciful.
a visit to the home of the victim, the bell (I recommend gloves!), You are made to accommodate the future corpse himself, a well-placed pistol shot (with a silencer !) e tanti saluti al padrone di casa. L’alibi? Certo, se poi the transition is to be the worst kind, a despicable blackmailer, the spectrum of suspects widens considerably, dramatically increasing the chances to get away. But even the most optimistic projections show that the murderess could imagine that the victim's apartment that night would have been more popular and busy ring road of Milan or Rome ring road during rush hour. Ben comes.
another problem for investigators who will be called upon to unravel the tangle. He just can not go to bed confident. In perfect peace of mind. As mentioned, you have a perfect alibi. The alibi of Scotland Yard. A warning though. The greater the number of visitors crime scene, and then the suspects and are also more likely that someone can, even inadvertently disrupt even the best excuse in the world ... ....
novel and the author never seen in Italy. A typical example of yellow investigation where many people really are not what they then say they are or are to be where they should not or would not want to ever have been less appropriate and time, leaving behind any kind of track. All or nearly so, of course, with a more plausible reason to take out the "deceased". Ben told with discrete sensations, perhaps in a diluted number of pages a little bit too much, which softened the pace and suspense, transforming the reading into a tiring outing dall'andatura pleasant and relaxing rather than in a frantic rush. He realizes the same story during the murderess, apologizing for any digression too, for some flashbacks, maybe not essential, to easy to give up some brackets.
And another where you find it so bad? To search for a fault at all costs, it is perhaps too disproportionate to the dichotomy between the very bad pierced - odious, blackmailed and various minor characters diverse and at the end you are doing blatantly rooting for the murderer, whoever he is in the hope that, at least once, the sfanghi.
A delightful yellow cut Specifically, told in first person by the offender, nearly inverted the story and takes the reader on the edge, however, up to the last row. Perhaps, as mentioned, not extraordinary in the rhythm, but still good quality, in perfect Dachshund, underlining once more the care and effort on the part of the publishing house to try to offer something that is not trivial, that can to distinguish itself in general. If not then you should meet in terms of suspense, you can always keep it into account as a guide, as a handbook of useful tips always carry, and which may have recourse if you ever have an urgent need to demonstrate that they have never been in a certain place at a certain time. You never know in life.
I beg you please treasure above all the errors committed by the guilty person narrator of this novel. Now I must leave you. I ran home to my beloved wife. I want to give her a surprise of those who do not expect. But there is no point in my looking. Today between 18.25 and 19.10, in fact, I will be, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhere else ... ... ... ...

musty smell - Marco Malvaldi (Sellerio 2011)

First great personal discovery of Italian Marco Malvaldi this early 2011, with "musty smell" as early as the fourth round of literature. After the first three stories whose protagonists are four elderly patrons of the Gleam, this novel sees the debut of an extraordinary and unique personaggio, Pellegrino Artusi, critico letterario, scrittore e gastronomo italiano realmente esistito a cavallo tra l’800 e il 900, ed autore del celebre manuale di cucina “La scienza in cucina e l’arte di mangiar bene”.
"Musty smell" is composed of a set of characters (and consequent suspicion) incredible, totally absurd and head castings. Unforgettable in this sense the offspring of two children of the Baron family, Gaddo mediocre poet-nothing to Lapo great misogynist pimp and Porcelain of the worst kind. Hope the old Baroness, who was forced to a wheelchair, but perhaps the only person with brain until her niece Cecilia (with the only misfortune of being born female in a time when women were relegated to secondary roles). From Mistress to Ms. Barbara intimidated by his two spinster cousins, the shadow of the Baron and Cosima Ugolina Bonaiuti iron, the first secret Artusi love. From the laughs eventually die an unfortunate figure of Yorkshire Crumb poor, wretched dog targeted actions as unworthy of the inhabitants of the castle and the protagonist of the novel's funniest entr'actes.
on all sovereign stands the figure of Pellegrino Artusi, a caricature of what comes out in a superfine brush, with its ten centimeters long white whiskers, a lover of yellow fork and absolutely deadly. Despite the comedy
el'irriverenza I wish to emphasize that behind this novel there is a demanding and careful research and documentation, found in the deep analysis of the political and social circumstance of the time, the accurate description of chemical preparations to even the recipes (yes, my feeling is this is a significant Malvaldi wolverine, at least as Artusi). Lovers of good food, it is to take several ideas in this direction; that gypsy meatloaf, for example, still tickles my appetite.
really a little jewel this "musty smell", a reading that reconciles with the yellow kind. With the hope that Mark will continue in parallel, the series of legendary Artusi, now I rush to the library to retrieve the saga of the three old men. This generates Malvaldi healthy addiction.

Carboni, Valdina and cultural mafia

There are two types of mafia. There is a mafia crime, shooting, killing, threatening, calling for protection money and burn the metal shop, which controls drug trafficking and prostitution, which operates the landfill and waste disposal. And then there is the Mafia culture, what the fishmonger gets the better part of swordfish (without paying ...), the one that jumps the queue at the post because he knows someone behind the counter, what for a medical examination at the hospital no Call Center, but the primary, or maybe even just a nurse.
The central difference between these two modes lies in the perception of being mafia of those who embodies the model. If those who commit crimes in the former case it is conscious (and often, unfortunately, even pride) to act illegally, in the second case there is however no qualms whatsoever, everyone simply tries to make as widely as possible its network power, small or large, feeding, sometimes without realizing it, a cultural system of patronage.

Summer of 2009. And 'the last week of August to Valdina, a State of the Tyrrhenian province of Messina, when the council received by the Culture of Sicily extraordinary funds to be allocated € 25,000 organization of shows.
E'un'occasione extraordinary for a small town, with the same figure that has prepared the entire program of events throughout the summer. Of course there is a problem, a big problem, and of timing: how to write the principle we are now at the end of the month of August, the holidays are already over for many and Valdina is slowly emptying the last holidaymakers. How
also using this unexpected good fortune?
They're discussed in a few days among the members of the administration. The proposals are numerous, such as who is suggested to allocate funding to the organization of a great autumn festival, who proposes to take in Serbian € 25,000 for the New Year's Eve in a show of streets to December 31, Going on sensational engagement of some well-known singer. At the end of the check
Nino Di Stefano, (strong man of the town Tyrrhenian, former first citizen of Valdina for two administrations and now deputy mayor of his ex-deputy mayor, Pierluigi Di Stefano), which requires the choice of Luca Carboni. € 25 000 Yet they seem a little too much, not to mention that the concert should take place on a Friday in late September, in a location different from that chosen for the summer shows and with very little time to organize media coverage of the event. Yet Nino Di Stefano did not listen to reason, he decided to sing on stage will be Valdina Luca Carboni, after all the funding it has provided him and does not accept interference in the decision.
surely amaze the determination of Di Stefano, to the point that some evil may perhaps think that the deputy mayor has worked a few personal return from the assignment of Luca Carboni ... but they are evil, the truth is that Nino Di Stefano is a huge fan of Luke so in love with the melodies of singer / songwriter from Emilia € 25,000 grant of engagement, move heaven and earth, moving boxes and equipment, find a date in an absurd night midweek in late September, just to hear him play.

" Well here is the problem, a problem that brings us back to the opening words, the Mafia culture, such a system in which the unjust, the illegal, it becomes natural.
Yet I still believe in the democratic nature of the country where I live, a nature that allows me the privilege to enjoy the freedom of thought, freedom of speech and expression, rights that allow me, under my responsibility, to launch a look on the things that happen around me, to give an opinion, an opinion with respect to the facts that I find most interesting, without fear of political reprisals, social or even physical, simply actually showing the deep love that binds me to my land by telling what happens there. And 'this is why I always refused the voices of those who, over time, advised me to submit my short stories by omitting the names, surnames, geographical and temporal circumstances. To these friends I always answered that it is precisely in the names in surnames, geographical and temporal circumstances in which we dig the groove between journalism and fiction, between information and fiction.
I never accepted this compromise, because I find it absurd to imagine having to be afraid to express a point of view, an idea, my vision of things.
What then, however, as we all know, that both the mafia does not exist ....

The rules of the anthill - Save Barone (Ed. Todaro 2010) The

Il protagonista è Efisio Sorigu, commissario di provincia trasferito a Milano, che una mattina come tante altre si trova involontariamente coinvolto nel suicidio di a man, and though normally the case as soon as they are stored, that look does not convince the officer that pushed to seek the reasons for the neutral gesture. Soon the investigation will include a suicide and some other unusual bank robberies that seem to somehow follow a specific thread of Ariadne, prompting the commissioner to go to the bottom of the story.

The rules of the anthill is a novel, surprising, unusual in its kind. First of all because, despite the structure of a thriller, with characters and characters typical of the genre, does not have the key of yellow that is the mystery. The investigation by the Commissioner Sorigu, in fact, it takes a precise direction and not is not difficult to guess what will, at the same time it departs from the classic yellow for an almost documentary approach that the author seems more interested in the outline of the story rather than the facts themselves. Barone presents us with a very current Italian society, where politics and bad business mix and where, in the electoral campaign, the media (and thus popular opinion) is heavily influenced by a clear strategy. The Baron of Milan is a bustling metropolis, almost drifting, which at times recalls the Chicago of the '30s in the hands of organized crime, and with his team Sorigu "vivacchiano" trying to limit the damage. A vision the author sums up in a bitter end when the disillusionment is the dominant element.

Despite a fairly solid structure and story, the author's style is often too cumbersome, reading you the feeling of its excessive presence should be at the expense of the characters, the left margin. The same Sorigu is a man with whom you find it difficult to identify with, just does not know much about his past, his life is the most disorderly imaginable (and therefore also not very original, given the various commissioners narrated by the authors Italian ). The author tells too much, too often cut off talks with ideas that break the rhythm, and, paradoxically, is better the character of the inspector Ballabio, an almost alter ego of the Commissioner, much more direct and simple and just for trying affection and sympathy. Underdeveloped, in addition, the female characters, especially Charlie, the companion of the Commissioner, held the edge throughout the book as if it were only a noise effect.

Ultimately, it should be acknowledged in Barone that he took an interesting (but depressing) picture of Italy today and have documented thoroughly admirable to give a contemporary story, but when part of a documentary novel overwhelms the narrative, it is inevitable that the whole structure of the book are affected, especially when it comes to a detective story in which pathos and rhythm should be an integral and indispensable elements of the story.

America's Deadliest Jobs

caressing - Massimo Lugli (Newton Compton 2010)

There was a lot waiting for the new work by this author of the thriller scene / Noir. Many were hoping for a third episode of the epic the "wolf" but not many were convinced and some (including this writer) was equipped with the curiosity to appreciate the qualities praised in July on other land and people.
The output of "The caressing" has satisfied the latter, including myself, feeding the already eager curiosity and bringing it to climax with the inclusion of the novel in the quintet of the final of the Witch. " A mountain of expectation that is partially caved in on the hopes and made part of the wetland review author. Since the first pages you are immersed in the universe raw discovering the author's style with a hint of disgust the first acts of the serial killer guy.
Tensions immediate and palpable and is cloaked in a good omen for the rest of the reading. The protagonist appears to us now a refreshing change, a young aspiring journalist, Marco Corvino, full of rich content and structure and certainly far from the famous and "outcast" Wolf. It is expected therefore to be sucked into a vortex of small black and atrocities, suspense and Zen philosophy, but it remains a little 'disappointed. From mid-volume even then, the graph of expectations begins to decline inexorably towards a record noir that does not give place to new and interesting story, so as to bring the reader to identify more non-serial killer in the true over-the text of the narrative moving any attention and condition of the biographical events and the young protagonist trying greatest tension while reading the stories of crime he has dealt.
The presence of the "deeds" of SK and its "attacks" at night in the life of Marco Corvino seem to be "loose" and do not evolve gradually. The author does not grant the right space to the relationship between protagonist and antagonist, but also unwittingly falls in the second to become quite a psychologist of the daily events of the first but not that they are somehow endangered or used for purposes of " SK. So it seems to us the whole story thriller consumed in a hasty and not very credible final. The draw
from their lives to inspire or guide the narrative of a work is a road most of the time proper and safe but in this case took precedence over narrative thriller / noir style of the author wasting some point on the graph index degrees.
look forward to the next work which will see the light day, again for Newton Compton, with the title "The 'Adept .

Death comes in small steps - George H. Johnston (Polillo 2010 - Mastiff No. 3)

" the Burma Road ... Road Adventure no more adventures. The road that leads nowhere and does not mean a thing. "

Cavendish is an American journalist traveling on the Burma Road, China, to write an article on this road that winds in the hills above the Mekong River. Once famous and of great strategic importance during the war, now seems out of the Burma Road and it seems that not vi succeda più nulla di eccitante e pericoloso.
In this
Mastiff are therefore all the ingredients of yellow action, up to a crazy final that does not spare even a few interesting surprises. The added value is definitely the Environment, China with its fascinating and majestic landscapes, often with an intensity described by the author:
"Dawn reached out his pink tongue down hills silver licking 's gathering darkness in the bowl of the valley. In the light of pine splinters doravano roughness of the black trunks. The dew glistened on the pine needles. "
Australian, born of a working-class, George Johnston was a journalist and war correspondent (in World War II ^) in the most diverse in the world, New Guinea, Great Britain, United States, India, China, Burma, Italy, Japan ... He wrote popular reportage on the war in 1948 and published The Death comes in small steps, starting to devote himself to fiction. His masterpiece, however, is considered to My Brother Jack (1964), autobiographical book about his troubled life, which formed a trilogy with the following Clean Straw for Nothing and A Cartload of Clay.

A lesson in dignity

What does it mean for us, for us Italians, the revolutionary wave that hit the North Africa? What a lesson we draw from this?
Maybe we can start by reflecting on the great demonstration of civility that these people have shown us. For many of us, now sleeping for years in political discussions and comfortable useless addressed on the couches of some elegant home, driven more by the need of intellectual 'that express the needs, far more compelling, body and soul, is a revolution word that clashes with the idea of \u200b\u200bcivilization far more condescending.
Dobbiamo impararla la civiltà, forse dobbiamo impararla proprio da quelle civiltà (un concetto ricorrente) with respect to which, in our rudeness in our complete cultural ignorance, we believe higher by men and women who still feel civilly to defend their dignity.
